![]() Sometimes they've changed the game a bit (Final Fantasy XII had a different level system, that was already reworked once). It was either a free gift, like Bioshock, Red Faction and Metro, or they charged you a premium for what is essentially an update and splits the playerbase (Bandai Namco loves doing this, and they have a track record of ending up with two broken versions on PC, instead of having a good reason to buy the game AGAIN). Now, back to the game, every time publishers have re-released their older material on the new consoles, folks on other platforms have gotten the same version in one or another form. The same is true in digital photography, you have the raw image in an insane resolution and without compression, then you edit it to look the way you want and compress it into whatever format you need. You wouldn't take a print and increase it, unless quality was irrelevant, you always use the negative image. It's like with analog cameras, you have a negative image of a picture, so you can make prints in different sizes and on different paper. The term originates in the music industry, where the original recording would be the master, that is being edited and sampled for the final production. Remastering isn't remaking, it is exactly that: You take the original sources, called "master" and produce a new version of the same product. A re-release is a good opportunity to remaster something. Instead of simply re-releasing the game, they took the opportunity to touch up everything they weren't completely satisfied the first time around, but didn't have the time, manpower or funds to correct. Of course they want their game on all platforms, because, as you said, it still plays fine and aged well. In case of the latter, the remaster is a re-release on PS4/XBone/Switch. I'm not sure if you didn't do any research or if you simply didn't find anything. r/CoOpGaming - A community for co-op gaming r/xboxone - Xbox-specific subreddit for general Xbox news and discussion r/playstation, /r/PS4 & /r/PS5 - PlayStation-specific subreddits for general PlayStation news and discussion r/pcgaming - PC gaming-specific subreddit for general PC gaming news, discussion and gaming tech support r/nintendo - Nintendo-specific subreddit for general Nintendo news and discussion r/shouldibuythisgame - Find out what's worth getting. r/gamingsuggestions - Go here to help you find your next game to play r/gaming4gamers - Discussion, bar the Hivemind Top-level comments must be at least 100 characters in length.Accounts must be at least one month old.External Links must follow these guidelines ![]() No topics that belong in other subreddits This subreddit shouldn't be used for advice of any kind.
